About Dropbox

Dropbox is a cloud storage service founded in 2007 at MIT and famously demonstrated in a screencast before the product existed. It pioneered effortless file synchronization β€” a magic folder that just works across devices β€” and grew to over 700 million registered users, going public on the NASDAQ in 2018.

The product's strengths remain reliable sync, selective sync for large folders, file-version history and polished sharing controls. Over time Dropbox has expanded into document signing, video review and team collaboration spaces.

Files are encrypted in transit and at rest, but Dropbox holds the keys, so the company can technically access content and will comply with US legal requests. End-to-end encryption is available only in high-priced team tiers. For users who want their data under their own control or under EU law, self-hosted or European alternatives are the usual recommendation.
